2nd Brown Charged with Gun Possession

By Rudy Haynesworth on July 5, 2010

"I dare you to....take a gun to the airport"

Robaire Smith is the second Browns player to be charged with gun possession in an airport this offseason.  Yes, you read it correctly.  Two players on the same team, both playing on the defensive line, carrying heat at airports.  Shaun Rogers, starting DT, was the other player to be charged.

To be honest with you, the play of the defensive line since the Browns return to the NFL has been offensive.  Now to add to that, arguably the two best palyers on the DL are in potential legal hot water.  Robaire Smith led all Browns defensives lineman in tackles last season with 62.  The team traded defensive end Corey Williams (who tied for third in sacks with four) and OLB Kamerion Wimbley who led the team with 6.5 sacks.

In Smith’s defense the incident took place in November, while Robaire was boarding a flight from hometown Flint, Michigan to Atlanta.  Smith was charged with a misdemeanor which carries a maximum of one year in jail.  Smith is 32 and Rogers is 31, these players should be examples of off-field conduct for young players like rookie defensive end Clifton Geathers.  But, unfortunately Cleveland still doesn’t have an organizational culture of winning and respectable off-field conduct.
