Aqib Talib In Trouble

By Rudy Haynesworth on March 30, 2011

"Come on Mom, Let's Ride"

Aquib Talib is considered to be one of the best young cornerbacks in the game.  He was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 20th overall in the 2008 draft.  He has 15 interceptions for the Bucs in his first 3 seasons.  Today, Talib and his mother turned themselves in to authorities on charges of aggravated assault in Garland, Texas.

Talib and his mother are alleged to have fired shots at his sister’s boyfriend.  This isn’t his first incident that involves going down to the police station.  He was charged with resisting arrest and battery (against a taxi driver) in Pinellas, Florida and sat out last years season opener against Cleveland.  A few weeks later in Week 4, he had a three interception game against the Redskins.  He has great potential, but his latest run-in (if convicted) could get him 5 to 20 years in prison.

One of the very interesting things about this situation is the fact that the league isn’t able to take any disciplinary action until it has a new collective bargaining agreement in place.  The player conduct code isn’t in place right now, but you can believe that once a new CBA is in place it will be very similair to the old one.  The league has commented that during this time of lockout, players will be held to the same standard of conduct that was in place before.  So, you can assume whether convicted or not Talib will face some sort of suspension stemming from the incident when play resumes.
