Bengals Benson Charged with Assault

By Rudy Haynesworth on June 29, 2010

Cedric Benson is unquestionably coming off his best season as a pro.  He rushed for a career high 1251 yards in his second season with the Bengals.  He came to Cincinnati after being released by the Bears in 2008 for being charged with two alcohol violations while boating in Texas.

Well, Benson is in the news again for all the wrong reasons.  Benson was arrested Tuesday morning stemming from an incident in an Austin nightclub. On May 30th he had words with bar employees which was the result of Benson allegedly shoving staff members and punching another in the face.

Benson was scheduled to meet with police to discuss the incident before being taken into custody Tuesday morning, but never showed.  He was released after posting $5,000 bail at the Travis County Jail.  The charge of misdemeanor assault carries a maximum fine of $4,000 and up to one year. (But we all know he won’t serve any time).  The Bengals say they were already aware of Cedric’s run-in.  But, the big question is whether the NFL  and Commisioner Roger Godell will come down hard on Benson with a suspension.
