Hey Oakland, guess what? There is a new sheriff in town and he is about to clean house. I don’t blame new Raiders GM Reggie McKenzie one bit for cutting players with huge contracts who have seriously underperformed this past season. Raiders late owner Al Davis gave out huge contracts to players who are decent but not great players like LB Kamerion Wimbley and CB Stanford Routt.
Routt had a solid season in 2010 because he was playing opposite of Pro Bowl CB Nmandi Asmougha. Routt was facing majority of opposing teams No. 2 WR’s. But after the Raiders decided to let Asmougha walk they made and paid Routt like a No. 1 corner. Routt was signed last off-season to a three-year, $31.5 million contract extension that at the time made him the third highest cornerback in the NFL. Now lets be serious, Routt is not a true shutdown corner or is deserving to be paid like a No. 1 corner. Routt is a No. 2 corner at best. This past season he struggled and played inconsistently and led the team in penalties with 17.
Expect more cuts to come as the Raiders try to open up some cap space and bring in solid football players, not a bunch of over-raters!
What do you think the Raiders should do at linebacker, Nique?
