Head Coaching Vacancies Filled

By Rudy Haynesworth on January 27, 2012

Tampa Bay Buccaneers- Greg Schiano (5):  Schiano brought Rutgers to NCAA respectability.  In doing so he developed NFL standouts like Kenny Britt, Brian Leonard and Ray Rice.  The Buccaneers are a young talented team, but they need a big play receiver and another running back wouldn’t hurt either.  Schiano coached Rutgers from 2001 to 2011.  He had a 68-67 record as head coach at the state university of New Jersey.  His first two seasons at Rutgers he went 3-20.  That would get him fired in the NFL.  Also, in his 11 seasons he never won the Big East.

Indianapolis Colts- Chuck Pagano (7):  Pagano was the defensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens.  He referenced his conflict of emotions in his initial press conference as head coach of the Colts.  He just lost the AFC Championship game after his defense held Tom Brady to no throwing TDs.  He comes into a Colts organization that has alot of  (soap opera) drama.  It is a foregone solution that the Colts will draft Luck, but the defense is still weak and what will happen to Manning?

Oakland Raiders- Dennis Allen (5):  The Raiders need discipline.  Everyone knows they lead the league in penalties.  Allen was the defensive coordinator for the Broncos last season.  Allen is an aggressive defensive play caller; which bodes well for Oakland with a great defensive line and talented linebackers.  Allen will take over for coach Hue Jackson, who only made it through one season.

Miami Dolphins- Joe Philbin (6):  Since 2007, Philbin had been the offensive coordinator for the Green Bay Packers.  Philbin has never been a head coach on the professional or collegiate level.  Of course, the Philbin family had to deal with tragedy with the murder of his son Michael earlier this year.  But, Philbin takes over a team with alot of talent.  He’s got two backup quarterbacks in Henne and Moore and must decide what he’d like to do with that situation.

St. Louis Rams- Jeff Fisher (9):  Of all the new coaches, Fisher is the only established winner as a coach in the NFL.  Fisher was a defensive back for the Bears for five seasons.  But, is better known for his 17 seasons as coach of the Oilers/ Titans franchise.  Fisher takes over a very talented team.  His defensive background will help him turn this team around (especially the secondary).  Including the playoffs, and a 199 Super Bowl appearance, Fisher had a record of 147-126 for the Oilers/ Titans.

Jacksonville Jaguars- Mike Mularkey (4):  Mularkey inherits a mess.  Jack DelRio and Tom Coughlin have been the only other two coaches of this franchise.  Mularkey was the Bills head coach in 2004  and 2005.  His record in Buffalo was 14-18.  He played nine seasons in the NFL as a tight end for the Vikings and Steelers.  He will have to evaluate his quarterback position and add more offensive weapons to make this franchise competitive again.

Kansas City Chiefs- Romeo Crennel (8):  Romeo Crennel not only served as defensive coordinator under Bill Belichek in New England, but was also the head coach of the Cleveland Browns.  In 2007, he led Cleveland to a 10-6 record and took over the head coaching job in Kansas City on an interim basis after the firing of Tod Haley.  Crennel finnished the season with the Chiefs defeating the Broncos and Packers (both playoff teams).  He inherits a loaded team with Jamaal Charles and Eric Berry healthy.
