Heisman Candidate: Denard Robinson

By Rudy Haynesworth on October 3, 2010

"Go, go"

Denard Robinson has been the most impressive college player this year for the 5-0 #19 Michigan Wolverines.  He has 1008 passing yards and and 905 rushing yards so far this season with a combined 15 TDs.  His first carry against Indiana yesterday, in a 42-35 win, was a 72 yard TD run where he just dashed through the defense with such ease.  He rushed for 129 yards last week against Bowling Green all in the first quarter.  Along with that, Robinson is making Rich Rodriguez’s spread offense look beautiful.  Yesterday alone, Robinson finnished with 277 passing yards with 3 TDs along with rushing for 2 more TDs and 217 rushing yards.

You have to believe that Robinson is the leader in the Heisman race right now with stats like that.  It is a long season, though, and Michigan has only played one game in their Big Ten schedule.  The next three weeks Michigan plays #24 Michigan State, #17 Iowa, and #22 Penn State.  Not to mention, of course, having to travel to Ohio State on November 27th where he will face another many have winning the Heisman quarterback Terrrelle Pryor.

Other players that are in the Heisman race are Washington’s quarterback Jake Locker, Stanford’s Andrew Luck, Oregon running back LaMichael James who had 257 rushing yards against Stanford last nigh and last years winner Mark Ingram.

Robinson has a few keys to winning the Heisman.  He must stay healthy.  So far he has almost 100 carries on the season.  That kind of pounding can take its toll and he has left Michigan’s last two games with a knee condition.  Also, he must involve his receivers like Trotwood’s own Roy Roundtree who has 25 receptions on the season, Daryl Stonum and running back Vincent Smith.  Last, Michigan has to win.  Their next three games are crucial to prove that they deserve to be a ranked team (facing three teams in the top 25 in a row) and that Robinson can lead them to victory like he did on a game winning drive yesterday against Indiana where he rushed for 30 yards and threw a 42 yarder to Junior Hemingway.
