There are some key injuries that are affecting teams in the NFL this weekend and for the rest of the season. One of the more publicized stories has to do with Vince Young and his relationship with head coach Jeff Fisher. Last weekend Young was injured against Washington. He left the game and after an argument with the longest tenured coach in the NFL left the stadium not before throwing his shoulder pads and jersey into the stands. You may remember a similair incident that happened to begin last season, where after leaving the opening game he was sought by police after being said to be a suicide risk.
Reports have Young saying to Fisher, “I’m not walking out on the team but on you.” Young had surgery on his thumb which will end his season. He later went on to apologize to Fisher via text message this week after sources say he was discouraged from being at the teams facility. Fisher then used Young’s apology as an opportunity to mention that the way to apologize as a man would be to have done it in person. Against Houston on Sunday the starter for the Titans will be Rusty Smith a rookie out of Florida Atlantic.
Another team that has had some injury issues at the quarterback position is the Cleveland Browns. The starter coming into this season was Jake Delhomme. That lasted all of a game after he was hobbled by an ankle injury in Cleveland’s season opener against the Buccaneers. After Delhomme went down, career backup Seneca Wallace came in to play well in relief, staring a couple of games. He also suffered an ankle injury which led to rookie Colt McCoy becoming the starter against the Steelers.
McCoy captured the heart of Browns fans orchestrating blowout wins against New Orleans and New England. But, late in 3-7 Cleveland’s loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, McCoy also hurt his ankle and Monday was seen in a walking boot at the Browns’ facilities. The Cleveland quarterback carousel has gone full circle, and DelHomme will start against his former team the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.
Elsewhere in the NFL, Washington Redskins running back Clinton Portis was placed on IR this week. He has missed the majority of the season. His groin tear may end a stellar career on a bad note, as Portis’ play has declined in the last few seasons due to constant injury. Washington at 5-5 hosts Minnesota this weekend and needs a win to remain in the NFC playoff hunt.
