When teams fill needs in the draft, or fail to, there are going to be reprucussions and work that the teams still need to do, after possibly missing on targeted collegiates. The biggest trade during the 3 day draft was that of QB Jason Campbell from DC to the Bay. Thats right, Nique was giggling like a little school girl, singing “Na,na,na,na, goodbye” to Jamarcus Russell (former #1 overall bust). Russell has struggled with weight issues, passing accuracy, consistency and motivation in his young career and may be remembered as another Ryan Leaf if he doesn’ get his act together. He was benched in favor of Jeff Garcia (now 41 years old), Bruce Gradkowski, and worst of all Charlie “Brown” Frye. With McNabb being acquired by the Redskins, Campbell became expendable. Similar to what Russell now is in Oakland. In a need for speed and with the drafting of Oakland’s 1st round pick ILB Rolando McClain, starting MLB Kirk Morrison (133 tackles last season) was traded to Jacksonville. This maybe the only smart move the Jags made associated with the draft.
Another team that maneuvered well, with new head everyting Pete Carroll, is the Seahawks. Of course Carroll had great success at USC after being a .500 coach in the league. So, it makes sense to reunite with former Trojan players. After already signing big WR/bust Mike Williams, during the draft the Seahawks traded two picks to the Titans for red zone runner Lendale White. Leon Washington also will be a Seahawk. The Jets drafted USC RB Joe McKnight and signed LT in the offseason, so Washington coming off of injury wanting a new contract was the odd man out.
Also, there were plenty of players that weren’t drafted that will look to get a shot in the league as undrafted free agents. Stafon Johnson (you may remember him from nearly fatal weight room injury) was signed by Tennessee today. It is kind of ironic that they just traded a big USC running back, and they sign a big USC RB. Ole Miss signal caller Jevan Snead sould’ve probably stayed another year, but he went undrafted and was signed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a possible long term backup for Josh Freeman. West Virginia QB Jarrett Brown and RB LeGarret Blount (you may remember from the punch in opening game against Boise State) were both signed by the 49ers.
