Quiet Strength…a memoir

By Alisha Boykin on October 26, 2010

I just finish reading the tremendous autobiography of “Quiet Strength” by Tony Dungy with Nathan Whitaker and it’s about a former NFL player turned leader who made history by becoming the first African American head NFL coach who led the Indian colts in a Super Bowl victory, setting new NFL consecutive playoff records, becoming the first NFL head coach to defeat all 32 NFL teams, the third black head coach to win a pro football championship in North America, juggling his family, life, career, and dealing with the suicide loss of his son. Dungy is now a prominent analyst on NBC Sunday night Football, the national spokesman for the fatherhood program “All Pro Dad” (which is a national non-profit organization that is built on a football theme and features more than 50 NFL players, coaches, and alumni who speak out on the importance of being a good father, and continues to stay consistent with organizations, and teaching leaderships throughout the Indiana area. My favorite actor (I freaking love him) Denzel and Pauletta Washington wrote the forward for the book stating, “Great achievements require great effort, stay obedient to God’s will.” Did you figure out the key word there RFT fan’s? Staying obedient, I have learned nothing will work in my favor if I do not ask God is it of his will, which is my way of life.  You must stay obedient and follow rules, if you do not believe in God and you depend on the universe for answers or someone or something else then stick with that rule.Dungy is a very strong believer in God and he bestowed that in his coaching philosophy which was to put faith and family ahead of football and do not belittle their players or scream at them. The most meaningful text I read was a statement from his father, “will it make the situation better?”  This was continuously stated throughout the book.  No matter how mad you get or how frustrating you are when something does not work in your favor getting mad will not make the situation better.  RFT fan’s I am here to encourage you today, don’t get frustrated work harder and if you believe in God then believe he will provide what he wants you to have just ask in his name!

No excuses, no explanations – Tony Dungy
