RACE TO #1 PART 2

Wait sports fans, I’m not done adding teams to the list of potential #1 overall draft pick recipients. I have two more worthy candidates to be included in the competition, or lack their of, at the bottom of the NFL. Nique’s Oakland Raiders are a reflection of their donut eating/ underachieving former first overall pick at quarterback Jamarcus Russell. Which makes you wonder if the Oaaaklaaaand Raiders do get the first overall pick in the draft who will they waste it on this time? The Washington Redskin’s struggles with head coach Jim Zorn have been well chronicled by NFL analysts. Recently Zorn’s play calling responsiblities were taken away. He was replaced as the head play caller by Sherman Lewis, who had been out of coaching for five years.

Going into week 8, both of these teams have just two wins. In week 7 the Raiders lost to the Jets in Oakland in an embarrassing 38-0 shutout. By the fourth quarter, the only rush rookie QB Mark Sanchez was facing was the rush to go to the bathroom, after eating the most publically acclaimed hot dog since Kobayashi, at the end of the bench. Remember, in week 6, Mark Sanchez threw five interceptions in an overtime loss to the Buffalo Bills. The Raiders were probably hoping for similar results, but by halftime, Jamarcus Russell was on the bench for a different reason. Incompetence. In week 6, to Oakland’s credit they did surprise the Philadelphia Eagles by actually showing up and upsetting them 13-9. But, the Raiders’ run game has been very disappointing with 2nd year RB Darren McFadden down for most of the year with injury.

On Monday Night Football, in week 7, the Washington Redskins ineffectiveness was on display, in primetime, for the world to see. The Eagles were the first team the Redskins would face all year that had a victory. The Eagles were coming off the loss to the Raiders and were looking to make a statement against their weakend division foes Washington. The Eagles defeated the Redskins 27-17. The Lo-light of the game was the mis-snap by Washington on a 4th down in the fourth quarter. You can’t win like that regardless of whose calling the plays. Jim Zorn’s post-game comments were hilarious. To paraphrase: he said ”I can call it the worst called game ever or the best, but I’ll do neither.” He also refused to take credit for his part in the loss. Zorn needs to be fired and owner Daniel Snyder needs to be forced to sell the team.

So along with the Browns, Rams, Bucs, Chiefs, and the Lions (who all have one or no wins), the Raiders and ‘Skins are both in good shape to get the first pick in the NFL draft in April. The Raiders last three first round draft picks were; Russell at #1 overall, McFadden at #4, and Heyward-Bay at #7. Al Davis what were you thinking? Should they even be allowed to draft first overall anymore? And the question with the Redskins would be who would actually be making the picks if Zorn were still the head coach. Billionaire owner Daniel Snyder has shown that he is no Jerry Jones targeting and overpaying for free agents like DeAngelo Hall, Derrick Dockery and Antwaan Randel-El in recent years. So I don’t trust the decision making of the Raiders or the Redskins organizations from top to bottom. We have our seven teams that are rarely competitive, so lets laugh at them and make fun of them together.
