Teams with still off-season work to do: Da Bears Edition

By Dominique Wise on May 15, 2011

Cutler finally gets some blindside help!

Draft Recap:

The Bears pre-draft plans was to find a RT in the first couple rounds of the draft which they accomplished with the selection of Wisconsin’s Gabe Carimi. Carimi’s best skill is pass blocking. He has nimble feet and has great upper body strength. He is good with his hands and rarely gets beat. I’m sure Bears QB Jay Cutler is happy ad should be.

The Bears also needed a DT. Pre-Draft rumors stated that the Bears were targeting North Carolina’s DT Marvin Austin, but the Giants selected him. The Bears did draft Oregon State DT Stephen Paea who is a solid run plugger.

The Bears third round pick of Cal’s FS Chris Conte was a gamble to me. Conte is a former corner who played one year as a FS. He just doesn’t make enough plays on the field.

Work left to do:

The Bears still need to get a shutdown corner. CB Charles Tillman is getting up in age and his cove skills have diminished. When free agency begins the Bears should go after CB Nnamdi Asomugha or CB Ike Taylor. The Bears also need a veteran WR, someone like Steve Smith or Terrell Owens would help and give Cutler more options. Depth at the DE position would help as well and finding a replacement for All Pro MLB Brian Urlacher should also be in the Bears off-season plans.
